Freshman English Instructor

Today in class I tried to have a conversation with my students about the importance of literature.

I love teaching. I don't know if it is because my narcicisstic personality loves having a 'captive' audience or if it's my life calling. I'm not sure at this point that I really care to know the answer. For now, I like what I do. an obnoxious amount.

I went to two seminars in the past couple of weeks. One was to learn about blogging where I told the group that I didn't blog any more. But, upon saying that, I felt a little sad. Also, I love teaching to an obnoxious amount which causes me to talk about it entirely too much. So I thought I would blog again. You are not being forced to read about my teaching so I don't have to feel guilty.

The second seminar was ambiguously titled "The Ten Year Question". The fascinating presenter, Dr. Ed Burger, stated that, by virtue of us being in graduate school, we naturally think about things in a different way than our students. And, our job as educators is to teach students a new method of thinking. So, in ten years, what will they remember from our class? Maybe not how important topic sentences are...but rather, how to approach something they read and accurately assess its meaning and how to agree or to disagree with it...that's a valuable skill.
